Schoonover Still Warlike
-
Sheriff Mahoney is keeping campaign promises made to Joseph Schoonover, the war-like German farmer of Oak View township. Last summer when Schoonover was cutting a wide swath around Lovell the sheriff promised to put him in jail, and last night the chance came. Schoonover was bound over for shooting at Mrs. Mary Brant and he failed to give bond. He was housed at the coop last night. Schoonover is still warlike.

Neighbors' Row in Court
Joseph Schoonover of Lovell, Charged with Shooting at Mrs. Brandt
Picking cotton in the midst of shot guns was described in district court today. Joseph Schoonover, an aged German farmer of Lovell, was put on trial for shooting at Mrs. Mary Brandt. Trouble had arisen over the land leased by Schoonover to Mrs. Brandt and by her turned over to her son-in-law. Schoonover is said to have ordered Mrs. Brandt and other cotton pickers off the farm and to have puncuated his remarks with two loads of shot. Somebody found a gun in one of the Brandt wagons and after Mr. Schoonover.
The defense appears to be that Schoonover was shooting at some ducks in the next township when shot rattled down on the cotton pickers.

District Court Proceedings
By assignment of the supreme court Judge Huston went to Chandler today to hear arguments...
...Judge Huston directed a verdict of acquital in the noted Schoonover case from Lovell. Joseph Schoonover was tried for shooting at Mrs. Mary Brandt, but it was found that serious intent was lacking. The shooting was at long range and with bird seed shot.
