Daily Dispatch in Richmond Virginia on Saturday November 26, 1859 From the Plains
reported death of Kit Carson- the Sioux indians threatening the whites
st. Louis November 23rd.
The Omaha Republican announces on the authority
of persons just arrived from Fort Kearny the death of the celebrated mountaineer
Kit Carson at Taos New Mexico where he acted as Indian agent. Major Schoonover
agent for the upper Missouri and Sioux Indians arrived at Saint Joseph's on
Monday he reports that the Sioux had sworn vengeance against all whites found
in their country. Major S says the Yellowstone River is
navigable for steamers 900 miles above its confluence with the Missouri and
that goods can be landed within 400 miles of Salt Lake City and very near
several forts in that region.

and here we see Bernard
Schoonover, Indian agent for upper Missouri . He was born in Pennsylvania and
assigned to the agency from Pennsylvania and was compensated for $1500.
