"Sad Casualty- Mr. Daniel Haynes, one of the proprietors of the steam mill at Dover N.H. became entangled in the machinery of the mill on the 17th inst. by which he was thrown with violence against the timbers and machinery over head, until (his) arm breaking released him from the wheel and he fell to the floor a (lifeless) corpse- his skull much fractured-arm crushed to fragments-besides other severe bruises."
Dover became a manufacturing center in the 1800's with the areas fast moving waterways being used as a power source. The Cocheco Manufacturing Company was a major producer of cotton goods. The company built large brick mill buildings in downtown Dover near the falls of the Cochecho River that were linked by railroad.
Interestingly, Dover's millyard shut in 1937, the year after Daniel Haynes (part owner) died. The millyard then was bought at auction in 1940 by the city itself for $54,000. Now called the Cocheco Falls Millworks, its tenants include technology and government services companies, plus a restaurant.
